From the early seventeenth century on, the beauty of Amsterdam and its canal district in particular has inspired many generations of artists. Throughout the centuries, artists such as Roelant Saverij, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, Jan de Beijer, Gerrit Lamberts and many others captured the development and changes in the canal district in their work. Their drawings show how the Amsterdam canal district would evolve over four centuries, to become a world-renowned monument, leading to its being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Along the Amsterdam Canals offers a representative selection from the splendid collection of drawings of the Royal Dutch Historical Society, which viewed either individually or together provide a beautiful illustration of how the Amsterdam canal district would develop over the years, while also depicting the development of the genre of the (Amsterdam) city view. Ranging from topographically correct recordings to atmospheric artistic impressions, there is one feature they unmistakeably share: love of Amsterdam’s ‘photogenic’ architecture.

Ferry Alink: de kunst als surplus – Gijsbert van der Wal

Ferry Alink (1937-2013) was de echtgenote van de schilder Willem den Ouden. Dat zij zelf ook tekende en schilderde is de meeste mensen niet bekend. Dit boek brengt daar hopelijk enige verandering in. Als kunstenaar was Alink de tegenpool van haar man. ‘Ik ben meer een detaillist’, zei ze. ‘Als wij samen op het strand liepen, richtte ik mijn ogen op het zand en de schelpjes voor onze voeten, terwijl Willem naar het heelal keek.’
Alink, eind jaren vijftig opgeleid aan de Amsterdamse Rijksakademie, schilderde en tekende bij voorkeur mensen, katten en stillevens. Nadat het echtpaar in 1967 van Amsterdam naar het Betuwse Varik was verhuisd, ging ze minder portretten maken en meer stillevens, meestal met bloemen of fruit uit de eigen tuin.
In ‘De kunst als surplus’ is een representatieve keuze uit haar tekeningen, aquarellen en schilderijen afgebeeld. De tekst is van kunstjournalist Gijsbert van der Wal, die het oeuvre van Ferry Alink samen met haarzelf in kaart bracht en haar uitvoerig interviewde over haar leven en werk.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Twee dagen met The Beatles in de polder (Speciale Editie) – Eddy Posthuma de Boer

4 juni 1964 startte de eerste Beatles World Tour in Denemarken. Daarna kwam de band twee dagen naar Nederland om vervolgens door te reizen naar het Verre Oosten en Oceanië. Woensdag 3 juni, de laatste repetitiedag, sloeg het noodlot toe. Drummer Ringo Star moest met verschijnselen van oververmoeidheid in het ziekenhuis worden opgenomen. Hij werd op de valreep vervangen door ene Jimmy Nichol, ‘een goede drummer’ volgens Brian Epstein. Dat mocht zo zijn, maar hij was geen Beatle en het waren dus niet de ‘magische vier’- the ‘fab four’ – die op het vliegtuig stapten. Dat was wereldnieuws. Cabaretier Wim Kan noteerde op 5 juni in zijn dagbloek: ‘Half Zuid-Oost-Azië onder de voet gelopen en Ringo in het ziekenhuis. Wat een wereld, wat een wereld.’

Rembrandt and his contemporaries: old drawings, new names – Peter Schatborn

Thousands of drawings by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists from the northern and southern Netherlands have survived. Some artists left a great many, others very few. Countless drawings have been attributed to Rembrandt over the centuries – but did Rembrandt really make them all himself? Were some of them drawn by Rembrandt’s pupils?
Peter Schatborn, former Keeper of the Print room at the Rijksmuseum and an expert on Rembrandt’s drawings, has been investigating these questions for years. Old Drawings, New Names is a fascinating account of the different ways of identifying the makers of drawings he has developed in the course of his long career as a specialist in the field. He demonstrates, for instance, that drawings which have been credited to rembrandt, sometimes for centuries, were in fact one by a pupil such as Willem Drost or Arent de Gelder – and conversely that drawings which were not attributed to Rembrandt really were the master’s work.
