From the early seventeenth century on, the beauty of Amsterdam and its canal district in particular has inspired many generations of artists. Throughout the centuries, artists such as Roelant Saverij, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, Jan de Beijer, Gerrit Lamberts and many others captured the development and changes in the canal district in their work. Their drawings show how the Amsterdam canal district would evolve over four centuries, to become a world-renowned monument, leading to its being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Along the Amsterdam Canals offers a representative selection from the splendid collection of drawings of the Royal Dutch Historical Society, which viewed either individually or together provide a beautiful illustration of how the Amsterdam canal district would develop over the years, while also depicting the development of the genre of the (Amsterdam) city view. Ranging from topographically correct recordings to atmospheric artistic impressions, there is one feature they unmistakeably share: love of Amsterdam’s ‘photogenic’ architecture.

Zingende kleuren, dansende lijnen: Het oeuvre van Stephanie Delprat – Ton den Boon

Eind jaren veertig, begin jaren vijftig begon Stephanie Delprat aan haar artistieke opleiding. Haar Haagse docent zei: 'Als je tekent of schildert, moet je ervoor zorgen dat de lijnen gaan dansen en kleuren gaan zingen'. In 2015 zei Delprat zelf over dat advies: 'Dat heb ik me goed ingeprent'. Het overtuigende bewijs is te vinden in de boekpresentatie Zingende kleuren, dansende lijnen, die gaat over het oeuvre van Stephanie Delprat: haar tekeningen, schilderijen, grafiek en glaskunst. Het overzicht wordt ingeleid door een uitvoerig interview met Stephanie Delprat. Zingende kleuren, dansende lijnen is rijkgeïllustreerd, fullcolor gedrukt en gebonden in harde band.

Wendelien Schönfeld: Houtsneden / Woodcuts – Gijsbert van der Wal

Wendelien Schönfeld (1950) behoort tot de interessantste Nederlandse grafici van dit moment. Ze heeft zich toegelegd op het technisch uiterst gecompliceerde medium van de kleurenhoutsnede. Schönfelds ongewone prenten van mensen, dieren, landschappen en interieurs hebben niet de stijfheid die houtsneden vaak aankleeft. Ze tekent met een guts in het hout als met een potlood op papier, en ze mengt de verschillende drukgangen (iedere kleur in een houtsnede wordt van een apart houtblok gedrukt) zoals een schilder zijn verf mengt.
In dit boek is een ruime keuze uit Schönfelds kleurenhoutsneden uit de afgelopen vijfentwintig jaar afgebeeld, gelardeerd met voorschetsen en verwant werk in andere media. Kunstjournalist Gijsbert van der Wal schreef er een inleiding bij op basis van interviews met de kunstenaar.

Schönfeld’s incomparable prints of people, animals, landscapes and interiors lack the stiffness that woodcuts are often prone to. She is capable of drawing with a gouge as if putting a pencil to paper, while using the various printing stages to mix colours on the printing press like a painter on a palette (every colour in a woodcut is printed using a separate woodblock). A wide selection of Schönfeld’s colour woodcuts from the past quarter century has been brought together in this volume, accompanied by studies and related work in other media. Rembrandt and his contemporaries: old drawings, new names – Peter Schatborn

Thousands of drawings by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists from the northern and southern Netherlands have survived. Some artists left a great many, others very few. Countless drawings have been attributed to Rembrandt over the centuries – but did Rembrandt really make them all himself? Were some of them drawn by Rembrandt’s pupils?
Peter Schatborn, former Keeper of the Print room at the Rijksmuseum and an expert on Rembrandt’s drawings, has been investigating these questions for years. Old Drawings, New Names is a fascinating account of the different ways of identifying the makers of drawings he has developed in the course of his long career as a specialist in the field. He demonstrates, for instance, that drawings which have been credited to rembrandt, sometimes for centuries, were in fact one by a pupil such as Willem Drost or Arent de Gelder – and conversely that drawings which were not attributed to Rembrandt really were the master’s work.
