Vanaf het begin van de zeventiende eeuw hebben het Amsterdamse stadsschoon en in het bijzonder de Grachtengordel vele generaties kunstenaars als bron van inspiratie gediend. Door de eeuwen heen brachten kunstenaars als Roelant Saverij, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, Jan de Beijer, Gerrit Lamberts en vele anderen de aanleg van en de veranderingen in de Grachtengordel in beeld. Hun tekeningen laten zien hoe de Grachtengordel zich in vier eeuwen heeft ontwikkeld tot een monument van wereldformaat. Niet voor niets staat de Amsterdamse Grachtengordel sinds 2010 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO.
Langs Amsterdamse grachten bevat een representatieve selectie uit de rijke verzameling tekeningen van het Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap die individueel en gezamenlijk een mooi beeld schetsen van de wijze waarop niet alleen de Amsterdamse Grachtengordel, maar ook het genre van het (Amsterdamse) stadsgezicht zich in de loop der eeuwen heeft ontwikkeld. Van topografisch correcte registratie tot sfeervolle artistieke impressie, maar met één onmiskenbare constante: de liefde voor de 'fotogenieke' Amsterdamse architectuur.
Dit boek verscheen bij een tentoonstelling in Museum Het Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam.

From the early seventeenth century on, the beauty of Amsterdam and its canal district in particular has inspired many generations of artists. Throughout the centuries, artists such as Roelant Saverij, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, Jan de Beijer, Gerrit Lamberts and many others captured the development and changes in the canal district in their work. Their drawings show how the Amsterdam canal district would evolve over four centuries, to become a world-renowned monument, leading to its being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Along the Amsterdam Canals offers a representative selection from the splendid collection of drawings of the Royal Dutch Historical Society, which viewed either individually or together provide a beautiful illustration of how the Amsterdam canal district would develop over the years, while also depicting the development of the genre of the (Amsterdam) city view. Ranging from topographically correct recordings to atmospheric artistic impressions, there is one feature they unmistakeably share: love of Amsterdam’s ‘photogenic’ architecture.

Rembrandt and his contemporaries: old drawings, new names – Peter Schatborn

Thousands of drawings by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists from the northern and southern Netherlands have survived. Some artists left a great many, others very few. Countless drawings have been attributed to Rembrandt over the centuries – but did Rembrandt really make them all himself? Were some of them drawn by Rembrandt’s pupils?
Peter Schatborn, former Keeper of the Print room at the Rijksmuseum and an expert on Rembrandt’s drawings, has been investigating these questions for years. Old Drawings, New Names is a fascinating account of the different ways of identifying the makers of drawings he has developed in the course of his long career as a specialist in the field. He demonstrates, for instance, that drawings which have been credited to rembrandt, sometimes for centuries, were in fact one by a pupil such as Willem Drost or Arent de Gelder – and conversely that drawings which were not attributed to Rembrandt really were the master’s work.

Jozef van Ruyssevelt, L’oeuvre graphique – Gijsbert van der Wal

Le peintre et graveur flamand Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941 – 1985) cherche à capturer dans son oeuvre l’ « éclat des couleurs » et le « miracle de la lumière ». Pour saisir l’un et l’autre, il se contentele plus souvent d’observer les pièces de sa maison,là où la lumière du jour vient effl eurer les murs et les meubles, et où les fl eurs, les fruits et les étoff es s’illuminent d’un fl amboiement particulier, partagés entre l’ombre et la lumière. Son travail rayonne d’une attention et d’un amour contagieux pour les faits et les objets du quotidien. Cet ouvrage rassemble pour la première fois l’oeuvre graphique complet de Jozef Van Ruyssevelt, dont une grande part a été acquise par le Rijksmuseum d’Amsterdam ces dernières années.
Van Ruyssevelt, professeur à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers, était un graveur virtuose.
À l’aide d’encre et de hachures, il parvient à évoquer la tombée du jour dans une maison, le contre-jour qui modèle une nature morte posée sur un rebord de fenêtre, ou la beauté des reflets du verre ou du bois vernis. Son travail d’aquafortiste est à la fois fi guratif et tout en suggestion: la précision des formes et la description des matières est au service tant de la composition que du rendu de l’atmosphère. Bien que noircissant sa feuille de denses réseaux de hachures, Van Ruyssevelt laisse avant tout son oeuvre ouverte à l’imagination du spectateur. Ainsi, ses plus belles eaux-fortes portent en elles la force d’une scène de cinéma ou celle d’un souvenir.
